Cat afraid of roommate all of a sudden?

My (f) male cat is afraid of my roommate (m) all of a sudden. My roommate has been there when I first got my cat so hes not a stranger. My cat wasnt like this before. He wasnt scared of him and my roommate would occasionally play and feed him even cuddle with him. He even took care of him when i was gone for 3 weeks. He was never scared of him. Granted he is a dog person and didn't know how to treat a cat but he learned over time. I think it started when my roommate wasn't at the house for around 5 days and then he just started running away from him. I can't figure out why he's acting like that. Anyone have any suggestions or explanation for this sudden change of behavior?
