The Business of Events is excited to partner with the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) to launch the Global Advocacy Alliance. This groundbreaking initiative is set to debut during the ICCA Plenary at IMEX Frankfurt on May 13, 2024. It will gather 200 leaders from the event industry to enhance dialogue and exchange innovative strategies for engaging with government authorities at various levels.

Gevme is backing the session, which will feature expert opinions from influential figures in politics, destination management, consortiums, convention bureaux, and venue operations.

The ICCA Global Advocacy Alliance is designed to provide attendees with actionable insights and tools to effectively promote the interests of the event sector, aiding its expansion and recognition. The alliance will focus on several critical aspects:

Educational Outreach on Advocacy: Offering educational materials and advice on the importance of advocacy in the event industry, underscoring its contribution to economic prosperity, community involvement, and cultural advancement.

Showcasing Economic Benefits: Presenting data and success stories that illustrate the economic benefits of business events, such as revenue streams, employment opportunities, and local business support.

Highlighting Social Contributions: Detailing the social benefits that business events bring, including enhancements to community facilities, support for local initiatives, and improved living standards.

Cultural Promotion: Explaining how business events act as platforms for celebrating cultural heritage, promoting intercultural dialogue and understanding.

Corporate Participation Strategies: Suggesting methods for corporate entities to leverage events for effective communication and marketing, highlighting the unparalleled value of live interactions for audience involvement.

Guidance for Government Relations: Providing advice on how to connect with government officials to advocate for supportive policies and initiatives for the event industry, going beyond traditional lobbying.

Enhancing Soft Power: Demonstrating how business events can boost trade, investment, and soft power strategies for locations, utilizing events to improve global reputation and attract investments.

This effort will culminate in a detailed toolkit to assist stakeholders in effectively lobbying governments, ensuring robust advocacy for the event industry.

“The Global Advocacy Alliance is a key part of ICCA’s commitment to advocacy, said ICCA CEO Senthil Gopinath. “We’re thrilled to be able to offer members the opportunity to learn how to more effectively communicate with key stakeholders to advocate for their respective sectors to governments and policymakers. By advocating for the best interests of our industry, we contribute to the collective growth and upward trajectory of our community as a whole.”

Martin Fullard, Director of The Business of Events, who will be chairing the event, remarked, “Advocacy is one of the biggest challenges our industry faces and is globally recognised as imperative. The idea behind this event is to bring together industry leaders to share best practices and create a toolkit for everyone involved to utilise in their advocacy efforts.

“Through this new advocacy alliance, we aim to empower convention bureaus and other stakeholders with the templates and tools they need to effectively engage with policymakers.”
