Grandpa Tribute

I turn 18 next week and plan on getting a tattoo of my grandpa's service number on my back from when he was in Vietnam. He spent over a year in Vietnam and then 30 or so years in the army reserves. As I grow older, I grow much more respect and curiosity towards him and many other Vietnam Vets however he passed away a few years ago and know only information my mom has told me which is vague to her as well. I also had to send a form to the NARA to find out his service number due to none of us having that information. My question being, would it be offensive to get this tattoo to honor him if I have no plans of joining the military at all? Thanks.
