You can partake in several minigames in Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. One involves building a deck and carefully thinking about your strategy to win match-ups. Here's our guide on how to win card games in Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes.

Our Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes card game guide discusses not just the tips and strategies to help you win it, but also the two characters that join the resistance as part of the whole arc: Glen and Shixeen.

How to recruit Kurtz and unlock the card minigame​

To unlock the card minigame, you must speak to a character named Kurtz. He can be found in Arenside (i.e. the village from the beginning of the campaign).

Note that Kurtz won't be there right from the get-go. Instead, you must play through the campaign until you complete the main objectives and army battle in Hishahn. Once you're done with this chapter, Kurtz should appear in front of a house along the western portion of Arenside.

Upon talking to Kurtz, he'll challenge you to a match. Beat him to recruit him into the resistance forces. With Kurtz in your army, you can build the Card Shop in your home base. It costs 2,880 Headquarters Funds. The Card Shop allows you to challenge the other characters that you've recruited, too.

As you progress and acquire the necessary materials, you can unlock additional upgrades for the Card Shop. These upgrades allow you to purchase better character cards (more on these later).

Basic tips to win card games​

You must get a higher score than your opponent to win card games in Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. We can simplify the mechanics like this:

• You and your opponent take turns placing cards on a board with three sections. If you win in a particular section, you earn points (denoted by the crown icons).
• Most of the time, you will have four cards in your hand. At the start of each succeeding turn, you must discard one card to randomly draw two new ones.
• Cards have base power (denoted by the number in the upper-left corner of the panel). However, you can gain boosts that increase power further.
• There are also cards that grant extra Field Points (FP), denoted by the small crowns to the side of each section. FP is added to your total if you win that particular section of the board.
• Successfully placing a combination of three cards in a section nets you bonuses, too:
  • Straight or flush: +2 power and +1 points/score.
  • Three-of-a-kind: +3 power and +2 points/score.
  • Straight flush: +5 power and +3 points/score.

As you can see in the example above, we won all three sections by having higher power compared to our opponent. Here's the score breakdown:

• Left section: +2 base points (crowns) and +3 bonus points for a straight flush.
• Middle section: +3 base points (crowns) and +3 bonus points for a straight flush.
• Right section: +1 base point (crown) and +3 bonus points for a straight flush.
• Total score: +15 points.

Buying character cards​

You can find the Card Shop in your base by using a teleporter to go to the Trading House - 2F. You'll appear in front of the Rune Shop, so just take the left exit and move down to see Glen managing the Card Shop.

Early on, you can only buy Starter Decks for 500 baqua, which grant you character cards with bonus effects. You'll always receive three character cards at random, and duplicates will be discarded automatically.

If you construct the remaining Card Shop upgrades, Glen will eventually sell Extra Packs. These are slightly more expensive but may contain better/rarer cards. The higher the card's rarity, the better its bonus effect.

Building your deck​

Winning the Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes card game requires you to build a proper deck. Talk to Glen to replace the cards from your standard deck (i.e. no effects) with the character cards that you've purchased. You should also consider the following bonuses from skills/effects:

• Some cards grant extra FP. You should play these if you're guaranteed to win a section of the board.
• There are those that provide bonuses based on:
  • Having all odd-numbered or all even-numbered cards.
  • Having cards of the same color or different colors.
  • Your opponent has cards of a specific color or a power value.
  • Options that allow you to discard once played.

Additional tips when facing other characters​

When you talk to Kurtz at the Card Shop, you're presented with a panel showing all the characters that you've recruited in the campaign, and you can challenge them to a match. Characters have a difficulty rating from C to S. Easy opponents tend to have standard cards without effects, or they're more likely to fumble their strategy. More formidable opponents have a lot of character cards in their deck, and they're more likely to go for combinations to gain bonus power or points.

Ideally, you should focus on a strategy based on your initial hand. For instance, you might start with a couple of 8s already, so it's a good idea to go for a three-of-a-kind.

In other instances, even 1-power cards become viable. Some gain +9 power if the cards in that section are of different colors or if you play them when your opponent already has more victory points.

How to recruit Shixeen​

Shixeen is the other character whose recruitment is tied to card games. To be clear: we were able to recruit Shixeen in Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. However, we're unsure of the factors that led to her appearance. We do recall what had transpired prior to that moment:

• We had defeated around 30 or so opponents. We're unable to confirm if there's a minimum requirement that tallies how many characters you've bested.
• Our Town HQ was level 3 already, and we had unlocked all Card Shop upgrades up to level 3.
• Our deck had character cards (no standard/basic cards). These included 4-star rarity cards, such as Nowa, Seign, Rising (i.e. Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising trio), and more.

While purchasing several cards from Extra Pack 2 and Extra Pack 3, we were surprised when Shixeen suddenly appeared right next to Nowa. We spoke with her and beat her in a match, which caused her to join permanently.
