Over night connection

My family and I will be flying on American Airlines this week with an overnight connection in Miami and then on to Overseas.

When we check our bags at our origin, will we check to Miami, OR our final destination OR be given an option? We would prefer to check to Miami so we have our bags the one night we are in Miami.
