I recently arrived in Canada from the UK to visit my girlfriend with the intention of staying for the 6 allowed months. When I arrived in Calgary however, I got pulled into immigration inspection (I hadn't booked a return flight and I'm a large heavily tattooed man. I wasn't surprised.) They stamped my passport and only allowed me into the country for 3 months, with the possibility to extend for a fee and by doing quite a lot of paperwork. I'm frustrated that I apparently need to pay 200 dollars to stay the amount of time that is usually granted for free to visitors. My partner and I are living with her family while we explore the province and have enough saved back to buy tickets home to the UK come autumn, but are on a slim budget besides that, and as young people 200 dollars does make a difference.
Does anyone know if there's any way to extend my stay for a slightly more affordable price? Or even if anyone has any tips on how to do it because we're a bit at a loss.
Cheers!
