I've always had a soft spot and been back to play it a few times in the last couple decades, but I've honestly never come across anything quite like it. I loved the game from the moment I first rented it at a blockbuster as a Ps1 game, and then went and bought it.
It had so many elements of what I love in games nowadays, I can certainly venture a guess. It was definitely an inspiration to my modern gaming tastes.
It was...
-roguelite (before I knew that was a thing)
-Hub based (build a town up and grow stronger along with it)
-Relationship building (like harvest moon or dating Sims there were people you could "woo")
-Monster taming (similar to pokemon, you made your team of monsters you raised to beat up the others, and could replace or catch new ones)
I don't know exactly why this particular game holds such a soft spot for me. If I were to guess its because pokemon and monster rancher were both around right about that same time I first played it. But it has always held a strong nostalgia factor for me.
Anybody else remember, love, hate, or otherwise have an opinion on this game?
