England in December: yes or no?

Hello, my wife and I (Americans) have been together for 11 years now, but have never had a vacation to ourselves or even a honeymoon. We now have the opportunity to leave the kids at home for about 10 days come December and I'm very interested in visiting England, specifically staying in Rye at the Mermaid Inn. I'm thinking we'd fly into London, take the train to Rye, and spend most of our days visiting surrounding areas, castles, pubs, maybe the Harry Potter tour at WB studios. We are looking for a relaxed feel, cozy by a fire, no massive crowds of people.

We're prepared for cold, but is there anything about the area in winter that should dissuade us? Any tips are appreciated!!
