China Eastern Airlines Co., Ltd., headquartered in Shanghai, is embarking on an ambitious expansion of its international operations with the introduction of a direct flight route connecting Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) to Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport (RUH). Set to begin operations on April 27, this new service, utilizing the Airbus A330-200, will run three times a week, strengthening the airline’s global network and offering travelers enhanced connectivity between East Asia and the Middle East.

Originating from the inaugural civil aviation squadron established in Shanghai in January 1957, China Eastern Airlines has grown into one of the nation’s premier carriers. Its presence on both the Shanghai and Hong Kong stock markets underscores its significant role in the industry and its commitment to growth and innovation.

With a fleet of around 800 aircraft, China Eastern Airlines boasts one of the youngest and most technologically advanced fleets worldwide. This includes a remarkable collection of widebody aircraft, positioning the airline as a leader in both commercial and technical realms within China. Notably, China Eastern Airlines leads the way in customer-centric innovations, being the first Chinese civil airline to permit the use of portable electronic devices (PEDs) like smartphones during flights.

The airline’s “Eastern Miles” frequent flyer program enhances the travel experience by offering members a range of benefits, including access to more than 750 VIP airport lounges worldwide and integration within the SkyTeam airline alliance. This reflects China Eastern’s dedication to delivering superior service and convenience to its passengers, who number over 150 million annually, securing its place among the top 10 global airlines.

China Eastern’s operations are significantly supported by the strategic positioning of Shanghai Pudong International Airport, a key international gateway for Shanghai and a major aviation hub in East Asia. Meanwhile, the King Khalid International Airport, about 35 kilometres north of Riyadh and designed by the renowned architectural firm HOK, represents an important international link for the airline.

The initiation of the Shanghai to Riyadh route is a testament to China Eastern Airlines’ strategic vision for growth and its commitment to facilitating cultural and economic exchanges between China and Saudi Arabia. It highlights the airline’s ongoing efforts to enhance global connectivity, fostering a closer, more integrated world.
