National historic designations can serve as reminders of both triumphs and complex challenges that have shaped Canada’s identity. Such recognitions encourage reflection on our collective history and inspire efforts toward a more inclusive future.

Today, the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, recognized the arrival of Vietnamese refugees in Canada as a national historic event. This acknowledgment is part of Parks Canada’s National Program of Historical Commemoration.

Following the Vietnam War’s conclusion in 1975, many refugees faced persecution and dire conditions, prompting them to flee from Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and other affected areas in Southeast Asia. Undertaking perilous journeys through jungles and seas, these refugees reached temporary shelters in countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Taiwan. The plight of refugees, particularly those aboard the Hai Hong cargo ship in 1978, spurred tens of thousands of Canadians and various organizations to offer sponsorship.

From 1975 to the early 1990s, Canada welcomed approximately 200,000 refugees, thanks to its supportive immigration policies and the collective effort of Canadians. These refugees were integrated into Canadian society through sponsorship programs, contributing significantly to the nation’s economic growth and cultural diversity.

The Government of Canada, through the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, identifies and commemorates key figures, places, and events that have influenced the nation’s course. By sharing these stories, it aims to deepen understanding of Canada’s diverse histories, cultures, legacies, and current realities.

The selection for these designations is primarily driven by public nominations, with over 2,240 designations made across the country to date.
