Who personally took your dog to get fixed?

My friend recently adopted a dog from a shelter. He was really happy at first but since getting neutered has been depressed and lethargic. IMO the shelter should have fixed him before homing him, that way my friend would have seemed like the savior. I may be anthropomorphizing the dog's feelings. I've never personally taken a dog to get fixed, but it has me questioning whether I'd ever want to. I still believe in fixing them. I'm reconsidering who should take them. My dog has never gotten upset at me for other surgeries, but she's also never been in a shelter.

Who took your dog to get fixed? Did the dog's behavior change toward that person? Did any of you bribe your significant other to do it?
