From April 22 to 25, 2024, the international media event “Hello China, Sunshine Hainan” took place in Haikou City. This gathering drew journalists from leading global media to explore and document the allure of Hainan’s tourism and cultural scene.

The media representatives explored various destinations within Hainan, including Haikou, Sanya, Qionghai, Danzhou, and Chengmai. Their reports highlighted the island’s unique offerings such as duty-free shopping, wellness retreats, rural tours, yacht trips, low-altitude flying experiences, and cruise adventures. This coverage aimed to showcase the dynamic evolution of tourism and culture in the context of the Hainan Free Trade Port.

Tourism plays a crucial role in the development strategy of the Hainan Free Trade Port. Over recent years, Hainan has been diligently working to establish itself as an international tourism destination, constantly boosting its attractiveness to both domestic and international visitors. This year, Hainan introduced new tourism products focused on six themes and 12 travel routes, catering to diverse interests such as heritage tours, wellness and health, sports, educational trips, and professional visits. A notable addition has been the new circular highway, which quickly became a major attraction.

In February, Hainan extended its visa-free policy to include 59 countries like France, Germany, Japan, and South Korea, covering various types of visits such as business, family reunions, medical purposes, exhibitions, and sports events. Additionally, Hainan launched the “Hainan Trust Pay” app, an innovative solution that integrates traditional point-of-sale (POS) functions into a mobile platform, enhancing the payment process for foreign tourists.

In an effort to globally promote Hainan’s tourism and cultural advancements, Xinhua News Agency together with the Department of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports of Hainan Province launched a monthly showcase called “Hainan Tourism and Cultural Excellence TOP 10”. This initiative highlights top tourism and cultural sites, new experiences, and leisure activities in Hainan, targeting travelers from the 59 visa-free countries.

So far, the campaign has conducted two rounds of selections, which were publicized on Xinhua News Agency’s Facebook account, reaching audiences in over 70 countries including the USA, France, the UK, and Italy. The initiative has drawn significant media attention, with over 600 international outlets covering it, leading to 170 million views and 60,000 interactions on social media.
