Right now I'm reading "The things they Carfied" by Tim O'Brien, he rights about what the war was like bothe before, during, and after his time in Vietnam, going into small details giving great scenery and a understanding of how depressing the war was, and what it was like emotionally.

I know it isn't a very well known about, with only about 1k US soldiers dying in combat in total from both wars combined, but I wonder, was any of the veterans writers? Did any write what it was like fighting the Spanish or Indians? Any books that give perspective of the war(s)?
